Pro Tools es el estándar en la industria de la producción digital de audio, y su empresa propietaria Avid ha decidido sacar una versión gratuita aunque limitada de este programa, lo cual es una gran noticia para todos aquéllos que quieran adentrarse en el mundo de la mezcla y composición de audio.
Esta versión gratuita denominada Pro Tools / First está prevista que salga para el primer trimestre de este año 2015, seguramente al mismo tiempo que la nueva versión Pro Tools 12, y tendrá evidentemente limitaciones con respecto de la versión Express o la versión completa de pago, como por ejemplo tener un máximo de cuatro entradas de pista simultáneas en vez de ocho de la Express, y soporte para tan sólo tres proyectos. Tiene el mismo límite de 16 pistas MIDI que la versión Express, en contraste con las 512 pistas de la versión completa. Asimismo no vas a poder exportar tus proyectos como MP3, o iTunes o Souncloud.
Pero sigue siendo un programa muy útil para los creativos, disponiendo de una serie de plantillas que proporcionan pistas de instrumentos precargados permitiendo a los usuarios empezar a crear una canción en una variedad de géneros, con grabación de hasta 16 pistas de audio (con un máximo de cuatro entradas simultáneas utilizando un interface de audio USB). El programa viene con más de 20 efectos, procesadores de sonido y plugins diversos (incluyendo los paquetes EQ III y Dynamics III), aunque si se necesitan más se podrán comprar a través de una aplicación de mercado interna. Asimismo va a estar basado en la nube, con un almacenamiento inicial para sólo tres proyectos y pudiendo tener disponible más espacio mediante pago.
Con este paso Avid da un paso valiente en la difusión de su programa estrella de edición de audio y que nos recuerda de alguna forma al equivalente en sonido del anuncio similar que dio Blackmagic de su programa DaVinci Resolve Lite.
